PREPARING THE GOURD |

Raw Gourd Scrubbed and Sanded Masked For Painting Interior Sealed |
The GourdGourds are related to the family of cucumber, squash and pumpkin. Gourds take on the characteristics of wood after they dry. The best gourds are grown in warmer climates. I purchase most of my gourds from California. The ProcessSoak the gourd in warm water, scrub with choreboy (metal pot scrubber) and let dry thoroughly. I generally let the gourd’s shape determine the cut and design. Its character and color variation will guide you in the design process. Start by doing the preliminary layout in pencil; when satisfied with the design, permanently burn in the images; when the burning process is complete, you are ready to apply any color; a variety of paints, stains, and dyes can be used. Let this process dry completely before applying the final finish; choose from a variety of high quality varnishes, which are available in different finishes.
